SCHOOLS

United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA)

Through the duration of the UTLA strike in 2019, I proudly joined the picket lines alongside teachers and families daily.

In 2016, I served as a parent delegate with a UTLA delegation led by Alex Caputo Pearl. Our small delegation with individual Board members to discuss priority issues, address concerns, and propose solutions.

For years, I have contributed to schools as an active parent volunteer in the classrooms, a School Site Council Vice Chair (multiple years), and an active member of parent groups —e.g., Vice Chair for multiple years with Friends and Alumni of Castelar Elementary School (F.A.C.E.S.)

Additional Activities

I continue to advocate for schools, bringing attention to issues through media coverage. I did an interview with Kyle Stokes to discuss the LAUSD Choices program. The segment was radio broadcasted on the KCRW station. Additional media coverage secured includes a co-organized press conference during the 2019 UTLA Strikes on location at Castelar Street Elementary as well as reports on our efforts to prevent co-location at Castelar Street Elementary with Metro Charter School (various news outlets).

I attend LAUSD Board meetings as necessary to communicate about inconsistencies in the interpretation and implementation of policies and procedures, propose changes to minimize and eliminate inequities, and to improve outcomes for the underserved. Most notably, I spoke on behalf of F.A.C.E.S. and as a parent of a student at Castelar Street Elementary School on the LAUSD procedures for determining and offering school sites for co-location.
